Your character will be governed by six different skill sets. These are: close combat, gunslinging, marksmanship, stealth, explosive skill, and horsemanship. Every character will have a base rating of three in these categories. You can increase this rating through choosing your character type and modifiers, as well as buying better quality weapons and horses. You can, of course, also choose to play a real life person who was in the area at the time, such as Billy the Kid or the Apache Kid, if you wish.
Each character will start with the base equipment available (see equipment thread) and $100 in cash.
Below is information on each character type.
Lawman
The Lawmen keep the peace in the few Western locations they can. Of course, their title as a lawman does not restrict them from getting their hands dirty on occasion, and some can possess larger criminal enterprises than those they are hired to protect against. Lawmen receive a +2 bonus to gunslinging, improving their ability with short range weapons. In addition to this, they are provided a weekly stipend from the State, of $40.
Outlaw
Outlaws aren't always bad, but where's the fun in being a good guy? They tend to keep to themselves and withdraw from 'civilised society.' They gain a +2 bonus to markmanship, improving their skill with longer range weaponry. Outlaw's get a bonus when trying to conceal their underground illicit activities from those no-good do-gooders.
Cowboy
Cowboys are nothing more than glorified ranch-hands, a station which can lead them to seek the finer things in life, often by gunpoint. They gain a +2 bonus to horsemanship and receive a discount when building ranches by virtue of their knowledge of the business.
Prospector
Prospectors are the perfect optimists, often traveling massive distances from East to West in search of buried fortune. They gain a +2 bonus to their explosive skill, can build mines at a cheaper price and have a better chance at striking gold.
Apache Tribesman
The Apaches are fierce warriors, what they possess in strength they match with smarts. They gain a +2 bonus to stealth. In addition to this, they are perfectly welcome in Apache territory, unlike the other characters, and when there they can purchase unique weapons at a lower cost.
Additional modifiers
In addition to your character type you can choose ONE of the following modifiers to boost your character's skill.
Boxer: +1 close combat
Duelist: +1 gunsliging
Sharpshooter: +1 Marksmanship
Horse Whisperer: +1 Horsemanship
Miner: +1 Explosives Skill
Tracker: +1 Stealth
