Connie remembered the Sheriff in El Paso trying to deter him from travelling to Steins Pass but he remembered the reward being over a $1000, it was long night by the fire just outside El Paso debating the situation, they decided when they realized it was best to earn some money protecting a town instead of a carriage. "An Apache ain't any more dangerous than a pissed of Mexican now right?" Connie said to his boys. he knew they faced a scalping but he couldn't depress his lads.
It turned out Steins pass wasn't a town as it was a cabin a fence and a water tower, "Shiite!" Connie thought to himself, he hailed to the federal inside, he wasn't gonna bother if they all turned out dead, knowing his Irish luck, the Apaches might be behind them laying an ambush.

'Now look at this, ain't you a sight?' David Splinter crooned as the Shine posse rode up to his cabin. Despite his attempts to poke fun at the mismatched group of guns for hire, he expressed a genuine relief to receive some support.
'Just me and mah wife, two sons and mah daughter out here. My sons Samuel and George are old enough to hold weapons, but have little experience in a fight especially not against those goddarn Apaches... I don't mean no disrespect,' he added glancing at William. 'One of mah boys spotted a few of em lurking around the other day. The risk to this here border office cannot be understated. We don't have much room in the cabin, but you're free to stay in the attic. You guys got any ideas on how to prepare for this here showdown?'

Connie got straight to buisness, he saw that the pass was a mere habutation in the mountain road before the border, situated in a clearing in the mountains.
Connie told his boy william to scout the pass looking for the presence of the savages, finding where they are camped, it took a while to convince william to dress like a savage in front of the women. William was also given orders to try and embed himself with the apaches, connie knew full well a man behind the enemy was worth ten in front. Connie, david and his boys were to grab and fill as many bags of rubble and dirt reinforcing the walls of the cabin, and build an obstacle around the foot of the water tower. Connie asked for rope so that they could make a crude zip line from the water tower to the cabin in case of an emergency, connie being the best shot in the group was to be stationed atop the tower.
Charlie and the splinter families best shot were to be atop the southern passes approach providing overwatch and disrupting any of the approaching war parties from the mexican border. Charles was to mine the cliff overlooking the aproach. It was to be detonated if the apache use the approach and provide to much trouble for the pair.
David and his other son were to protect the northern US approach, they were advised to put up brief resistance and withdraw to the cabin if they come across any apaches.
Ideally if William cant infiltrate the apaches then he should come back and be stationed in the cabin protecting the women. From the attic, there will be open holes in the roof allowing connie to jump in if need be and make firing holes to cover the gorge and in the floor so he could fire into the backs of the apaches the daughter of the splinters will be here, to help she will be given a pistol and help reload a gun if necessary. The wife will defend the cabin with william or without him depending on the situation.

David and his elder son watched the Northern pass. A single rider cantered into view, beating his horse near to death. It was William. He told the two men that the Apaches were coming from the North, a raiding party of ten men.
With their stealth attack compromised the Apaches had their main advantage neutralised and, despite greater numbers, the defenders were the greater force.
It wasn't long before the Apaches arrived. William, David and his son Samuel opened fire from range. Two Apaches were killed, and another one was shot from an even greater range by Connie. However, David missed his mark and ended up being hit himself. By this time, George Splinter and Charlie Shine had made their way into the fray, both firing from afar, and both taking down one Apache a piece.
The Apaches, unable to use their horses to their betterment, dismounted and a gunslinging battle ensued. Samuel and William began, neither making much of an effect, until William's tomahawk cut down one of the approaching savages in a blaze of poetic irony. Two others were taken down by Connie and Charlie, though George Splinter was killed in the crossfire.
The Apaches, having lost eight out of ten men, decided to cut their losses and fled.
With David and George dead, the Splinter family would have to be headed up by the eldest son Samuel. After burying his father and brother, Samuel sent word to the County administrations and authorised the payment of the Shine family for their services. Samuel opted to take up his father's role as a Marshall, and due to his experiences, was unopposed in his efforts.

The sun lay low over Stein's Pass as Doc Murray arrived. Freddy and Elijah trailed behind him, mumbling slightly. There was something strange going on in these parts, and a brave, unhinged man was needed to delve in deep. Time would tell what lay behind sudden disappearances; British fae, or Arab Djinn, there could be some American cousin lurking in the hills. Or it could just be bandits, Murray mused. He lit a cigarette. His headaches were clearing, somewhat.
He knocked smartly on the Splinter cabin, and waited for an answer.

'Howdy!' Came the response from within the cabin. The voice was that of a young woman, who shortly thereafter introduced herself as Samuel's wife. It seems that in the time since the last attack, Sam had found himself a woman, who had promptly borne him a baby son. The horrors of the Apache raid had long since been, but the event would never be forgotten in the Splinter household.
Doc Murray and his boys were invited in. Though despite the pleasant nature of the Splinter's, the baby would not stop crying in the presence of Elijah and and Freddy, causing some unease on the part of his mother.
'So gentlemen, can you handle a glass of gutrot? We don't have any of that fancy town liquor out here.' Samuel was in high spirits, the Splinter's clearly didn't have regular visitors. 'What brings you to these parts?'

Doc Murray became uneasy at the baby's unease. He would have to leave, and quickly. Ahh, but the less attention drawn to Freddy and Elijah the better... damn, wouldn't people talk?
"I'm afraid I must decline your invitation, Mr. Splinter. My two colleagues have... uh... joined the Temperance. I myself... well, I'm something of a weak stomach. Either way, we can't stay long. We've come looking for information on the..."
He paused a moment, and signaled to the horses. Freddy and Elijah mutely wandered over to them. The baby settled.
"Pardon me. We've come for information. Seems people have been going missing in these parts. What can you tell me about that?"

'Oh.' Samuel was visibly disappointed. 'Well, I heard of strange happenings around these parts. I was going to go investigate a small mine, a little south of here. Apparently the entire population just upped and vanished into thin air. Yeh, you heard right, all six of em! You're free to ride out with me, see what we can find?'

"Sorry to disappoint you, partner," Doc Murray said, "We don't have much time for social calls, and that. Though I suppose it gets mighty lonely out here. Say, We'll come along with you to the mine. Let's see what we find."
Freddy and Elijah were already on their horses, ready to go. Doc Murray mounted his horse, and waited for Samuel.

'Righty, it's not too far out. Just over yonder in the Peconcillos. I'll holler when we're close.'
