Sentenza had been travelling near Hachita when he heard of the mindless slaughter and damage to public and private property that had befallen the town during the mysterious raid several mornings prior. He had been greatly incensed by the news and sympathized greatly with the good townspeople. Or so went the tale that he so convincingly relayed to the town council upon the meeting he had resolved to arrange with them.
"Gentlemen, it having played on my mind for hours on hearing of it, I thought, 'By damn Sentenza, you should make for Hachita and plan a meeting with the town council; you should help those good men and women discover the identity of those that raided the town and track them down and ensure justice is done upon them. What is more, you and your men should protect that peaceable town lest another raid occur.'
"And so I find myself here, gentle citizens of Hachita. With your blessing I will endeavor to defend and protect you from whatever ruffians inflicted this horror on you. I will however require the sum of $200 per week to afford you such protection, as much as it pains me to talk money at a time like this."

The council was somewhat underwhelming, with everyone deferring to the judgement of James Small. Small proposes $150 dollars a week, but if any attack on an institution in Hachita occurs he expects defense. If the contract is reneged upon, the payments will cease.

In light of recent calamities threatening the security and welfare of the people of Hachita, Angel Eyes writes to James Small. He is informed that from now on, Angel Eyes and his entire Posse will permanently station themselves in Hachita in order to ensure its protection. Angel Eyes writes that according to his personal informants, these latest series of raids were directly connected with Jeremiah Corbyn's activities in the town. Angel Eyes recommends that if future violence is to be avoided, the best course of action would be to remove Jeremiah Corbyn's commercial influence from the town.
In addition to this recommendation, James Small is informed that if Hachita is to enjoy the protection of Angel Eyes' Posse in the weeks to come, their wages must increase. Feeding, arming and equipping keepers of the peace is no cheap business.

Several days after Sentenza's departure, James Small receives another letter. It reads that Sentenza is aware of another planned raid on Hachita a week hence. Angel Eyes' informants tell him that this raid is going to be considerably greater and more severe than the ones already unleashed on the settlement. Estimates thus far indicate a party of as many as 30 brigands.
Sentenza indicates his willingness to come to Hachita's defence if only he could afford to outfit and equip his men properly. A one off payment of a substantial enough sum ought to do the trick.

James Small is willing to increase Sentenza's payments to $200. However, if they are unable to defend against any future raids then Hachita will contact the U.S. Marshall's office and look into basing a Sheriff in the town.

His entire gang, excluding those members exploring Miracle arrive in the town expecting the raid Angel Eyes had warned Small of days prior.
